While many employees are now working from home or even in “lockdown”, other workers are still working on-site to keep essential industries running. While the definition of these “essential workers” differ from country to country, one thing remains the same – they are critical to keeping each country functioning during this pandemic and are also more at risk of being in contact with people carrying the COVID-19 virus.
Depending on the profession, there are many ways essential workers can stay safe at work – from basic hygiene measures to wearing PPE (personal protective equipment). But what about when they step out of their work environment and return home?
Safeguarding your family
As well as following the above rules at work, essential workers can also adopt a “getting safe at home” routine that will help safeguard their family and loved ones at the end of their day. Here is how:
1. BEFORE YOU LEAVE WORK
If possible, the ideal is to shower and change out of your work clothes while at work.
2. WHEN YOU ARRIVE HOME
Wipe the steering wheel, controls and door handles of your vehicle with an antiseptic wipe.
3. BEFORE YOU GO INSIDE YOUR HOUSE
Pause, breathe, reset. Take your time.
4. KNOCK ON THE DOOR
Have someone open the door from the inside.
5. STEP INSIDE AND CALL OUT HELLO
Let loved ones and children know you are home but don’t cuddle or touch anyone yet!
6. HAVE A PLASTIC “DECONTAMINATION” BOX BY THE DOOR
Take off your work/commute shoes, outer clothes/coat/bag, keys, pens and glasses. Wipe everything down with a damp soapy cloth and place clothes directly in the
washing machine.
7. PHONE
Keep it in a clear zip lock bag while you are at work. When you get home, empty it out of the bag into the decontamination box – wipe your phone clean with a damp soapy cloth and throw the plastic bag away.
8. WALK STRAIGHT TO A SINK OR A SHOWER
Don’t touch any doors, get someone else to open them for you. Wash or shower – specially your hands, arms and face – with soap and hot water.
9. NOW YOU ARE CLEAN
It’s time to relax and enjoy your evening.
